Bangtwister are a local
Glasgow band, who look as 70’s as space hoppers. Flares, facial hair
and groove is very much on the cards, and the band certainly put a lot
of effort into entertaining the crowd. Always interesting to watch, they
did suffer a little from a harsh guitar sound, but made up for it with
their Blue Cheeresque set. I’d go so far
as to say that they were probably the most interesting band of the
night, and I’m sure they’ll be worth checking out if you a dig a bit
of retro.
Beaver on the other hand
were a bit dull. I don’t really know their stuff, but on the strength
of their performance I don’t think I’ll check it out. They weren’t
particularly bad, but they just seemed a little bit bland, with no real
spark to set them apart from the rest of the Sabbath
wannabees. However at some points they did seem to hit a perfect groove,
suggesting that perhaps on another night they might have been a little
bit more lively. I guess I’ll give them one more chance.
Which is what I was giving headliners Spirit
Caravan. Having seen them getting completely blown away by Hangnail
in the same venue about a year previously, I didn’t have much faith
that Wino and his cronies would hold my attention. As a consequence I
missed most of their set by locating myself in the upstairs bar. I think
in this case I may have made a bad call. Upon returning to catch the end
of the set and the encore, I found a band who seemed relaxed and
altogether much more entertaining than the one that had bored me a year
earlier. The 'Caravan boys had a great
sound to boot, and Wino’s guitar playing, although occasionally a bit
self indulgent, can hardly be faulted. Next time they come back, I’ll
watch them from their opening to make my final judgement. Bangtwister still stole the show though. |
