Cool stoner rock! Once again my favourite stuff this issue comes from the retro side of life. Tummler have a well produced (and I mean it sounds pretty damn good) demo which moves from Orange Goblin-esque stoner stuff to a mixture of Blind and Deliverance era Corrosion of Conformity. The songs spread over aeons and, although perhaps on some listens this leads to boredom, I’d argue that in general it adds to the atmosphere these guys are trying to produce.

Unusually in places the songs seem to actually have coherent lyrics, which in the case of The Burning of West Memphis, could actually be about something other than cars and the desert. The vocals in fact are a shining point, coming across as familiar but not an obvious rip off of any one (i.e John Garcia). Tummler are more metal than Kyuss and Fu Manchu, which is no bad thing, in fact its refreshing to hear a band doing the groove in a more traditional method. Although only three tracks long, this lasts longer than your average punk album and is certainly worthy of further investigation. I’ m sure you’ll be hearing more from this band.

Hailing from Australia's New South Wales, This Tangled Web have deliberately set out to produce "music that defies categorization". Bastards. They sure know how to make a reviewers job hard! They have largely succeeded on this three track CD, as it is very hard to pin down, but thankfully a few weeks ago I was sent an equally bizarre CD - the new Beyond Dawn album. They both share a very similar mood, and have vocals which often seem flat and out of tune. In this case though, I think it's more down to the singer than anything else.

Atmosphere is the name of the game. Song structures and anthemic choruses are definitely nowhere to be seen, but there are beautiful underlying soundscapes in abundance. Depressing and understated, it probably fits in quote well with what our very own Space Hopper has been listening to recently.

The vocals are really my main worry. They don't cut it. Hopefully their upcoming recording should redress this problem a bit. To a certain extent it doesn't matter though, because the vocals are never the focus - at times you even wonder if there are any at all. The production could also be improved a tad, but for a demo it's perfectly adequate.

Verdict: Depressing and structureless....  cool!

This three track demo from Illinios based Ditchwater is a combination of Korn, Soulfly, and modern Sepultura with some Corrosion Of Conformity vocals thrown in for good measure. The impact of this kind of music relies largely on the tight production that those big-budget bands can afford, and as such this sounds slightly lacking. Having said that, the songs themselves are very solid. It's much more enjoyable than most Korn-esque stuff - it has some melody.

Despite what I said above, the production is pretty good for a demo. I wouldn't be surprised if someone picked up on the band from this and they got signed.

Verdict: Very promising. Keep an eye out for them.
